Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia, is a comedian and actor. Chieng
is currently a Senior Correspondent for The Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is
the creator and lead actor on the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student. It
debuted on ABC Australia as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was
born to a Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was
educated in Singapore and the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire,
from 1989 until 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah in 2013 at the comedy
festival in Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was offered the Daily Show's reporter
role two years after. Chieng was named one of the top 10 comics to watch by
Variety in July of 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The
Daily Show to discuss his response to an Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many
thought was racist. Chieng spoke in expletive-laden terms about the segment of
Fox News, a conservative news network. Chieng also visited New York City's
Chinatown in which Watters had joked about the residents. The viral video
received coverage in Slate and the Washington Post. In his young years, Chieng
was an Singapore Sea Scout. Even though he's lived in Australia for over a
decade, Chieng does not hold citizenship or permanent residence status in
Australia. Chieng laughed in 2018 when he said the cynophobe was his name, but
later claimed that he was 100 % not scared of dogs.
